JAN-2019   Linden, NJ, A 27-year-old Hillside woman was arrested on charges she embezzled $16,000 from a dental office in the city, police said Thursday.

Carla Sousa was arrested Tuesday and charged with third-degree theft, police Capt. James Sarnicki said.

He said Sousa worked at Magic Smile Dental in Linden, and last June a bank notified the dental office that checks made out to the business were diverted to Sousa’s personal bank account.

The dental practice contacted police in September, and after a two-week investigation by Detective Kevin Mikolajczyk, an arrest warrant was issued for Sousa, Sarnicki said.

Sousa was released on $20,000 bail, pending a court appearance later this month, the captain said.

Sousa faces a third-degree charge of theft. Third degree crimes carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison upon conviction.
